Sunday Morning Faith

A contrast between well-worn sayings heard in church culture and enduring truth, this reflection calls for a faith that lives beyond Sunday—one that stands in weakness, walks through darkness, and overcomes through Christ.

By Steve Wilkins

God helps those who help themselves
            Sunday
The family that prays together stays together
            Sunday
Cleanliness is next to godliness
            Sunday
God won’t give you more than you can handle
            Sunday

Just follow your heart
            Sunday
Everything happens for a reason
            Sunday
Let go and let God
            Sunday
When God closes a door, He opens a window
            Sunday

I don’t want a Sunday morning faith

I want faith to face the lions
Faith to take a stand
Faith to walk on water
To take possession of the land
I want faith to face down giants
Turn the tide toward victory
Whatever may come
With my eyes to the Son
I want the faith that overcomes

God helps the helpless
            Everyday
Sometimes families fall, but pray anyway
            Everyday
Godliness is ours by faith
            Everyday
In my weakness His strength is revealed
            Everyday

The heart is deceitful; follow Truth
            Everyday
Some things just happen
            Everyday
Work out salvation
            Everyday
God can be found in the darkness
            Everyday

I don’t want a Sunday morning faith

I want faith to face the lions
Faith to take a stand
Faith to walk on water
To take possession of the land
I want faith to face down giants
Turn the tide toward victory
Whatever may come
With my eyes to the Son
I want the faith that overcomes
